WH40k is not actually "grimdark". Religion and prayer actually works in this universe (I know it works both ways - to the chaos Gods as well), but imagine the implications - if you are a true believer in the Emperor's will there is no need to fear injury or death because you know you die fighting for a GOD who protects humanity. Hardly anyone would join Chaos because they would see the first few thousand chaos cultists obtain powers but then get screwed over in a variety of horrible ways. I mean shit, with a God on your side everyone would fight like Blood Angels Death Company. It's our reality, where religion and prayer have no effect, that's grimdark.
